Welcome Home, Sole Sister!

Wednesday, April 19, 2017

When we first started We Are Sole Sisters as a travel blog in 2011, the goal was simple: to experience, document and share our adventures all over the globe. In more 6 years of travel blogging, I had grown to embrace this lifestyle and profession.

But it had also become a job.

And as we all know, when you do something with the primary goal of making money, things start to go downhill from there. What used to excite me began to bore me. I got tired of writing for others, or writing about topics that no longer held my interest.

I began to realize that some things need to be done simply for the act itself, and nothing else. Not to make money, attract more readers, or grab people's attention. To write simply for the love of words and ideas.

I had been tempted to just stop. To simply let go and pat myself on the back and say "Well done, blogging for 6 years is already a feat in itself."

But something was telling me to stay, sit, listen to that inner voice that still wanted to create and tell stories.

So here I am. And here you are.

This blog has been my home. It's where I place my hopes, dreams and ideas. I've decluttered it a bit, removed all the useless fringes, made it more comfortable for you to stay. It may feel a bit strange for a few minutes. But give it time, it will grow on you.

If you're looking for those old travel articles, don't worry they're still housed here. You can easily find them using the search button. But these are the things that are close to my heart and I would like to share them with you.

This is where I talk about my experiences and reflections. Some sunlight to brighten our day, even when it's cold out, even when things get tough.

My adventures with food- both making them and eating them.

Places I've been. But don't expect any how to guides or where to go's. I just want to share stories, how a place has transformed me or made me feel.

All things fun like playing in water, snow, or mud.

This is where the tough stuff comes in. I want to share about my challenges of being foreign, trying to fit in, raising a multi-cultural child and our life as a family.

I love bringing like minded people and ideas together. This is the space for the events, workshops and retreats that I'll be organizing just for you.

I'm in love with words and foreign words, most especially. I'll be sharing my adventures in learning languages.

Do stay. Look around. Feel at home. Have some wine. I'm so glad you're here.

  2. Glad you didn't stop. :)

I've been blogging for just about 3 years now and I also felt being bored of what I'm doing because it began to be a business blog. But then again, I remembered how I started, how I wanted to share my experiences, and how I love writing with what I really love.

And just like you, recently, I had a mini blog make over, rechecked what I really love to write about and share.

Thank you for this blog post. It inspires me to never stop and include love in whatever I do <3

    1. Hey there Pia, so nice of you to share your own story. I'm so glad I'm not alone in this. It's true that every once in a while we need to ask ourselves why we continue to do what we do. And see if it still resonates with who we are. Cheers to starting fresh and doing what we love. I appreciate you!

  3. dear Lois, it was very interesting to read your reflection :) I think it was a normal process, where the money you made and allowed you to live made you write and create your articles (even the ones you didn´t had a special interest), but now you are in a new stage in life. You grew up over the last years and this blog is part of your life and your readers. The most important, in my opinion, is to keep writing and motivated to live your life, enjoying your family and doing what you like most to do :) hugs PedroL

  4. Hey Lois, Thanks for this post. I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with my own blog over at 365traveldates but haven’t had time as Camille and I have been busy building a hotel in El Nido. I appreciate this short post on many levels. The idea of blogging your heart out for yourself and an audience to receive is great. The idea of keeping a diary or a journal for payment is a bit of what throws me off with the blogging and how to keep things authentic. While we had the temptation to move towards blogging in a way that was profitable we ended up not. We’re quite thankful but now it’s simply been a platform for those who want to follow the journey of life through our lenses. Thanks again and hope to meet you one day! Cheers, Mark
