It is a vacation after all; so, temporarily forgetting your diet is totally forgivable, right?

I can always work out and diet when I get back. This is what I would usually tell myself before every trip, only to be met by a horror show stepping onto the scale the moment I get back.

(But holidays are for relaxing! And I LOVE food!?)
For frequent travelers, putting on the pounds does not only apply to luggage. Soon enough, our bodies start packing on the pounds too. This held true during my best friend’s Hen Do in Hong Kong. The food escapades and endless partying took a toll on our bodies.

The 24hr Hotel Gym - Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott Hotel

In the group, I am the gym rat. Fitness has always been a big part of my life. Although hung-over and exhausted, I made it a point to encourage the gals to hit the gym with me. This allows us to burn the excess calories and also sweat out the toxins from the alcohol.

Millenials are known to always be in search of genuine experiences. Instead of hanging out in nightclubs, millenials choose to spend their money on learning and discovering. Our generation has put more importance on fitness than the past generations.

Traveling, learning a new skill, discovering new music and staying healthy have become our focus. Being physically fit allows us to travel further and experience more. Hey, imagine walking up the Great Wall or hiking a mountain without some degree of fitness!

My trip to Europe in the past year was more than just for the shopping and the food. Being a thrill seeker, I sought out ways to burn calories while exploring. This included a 20 KM bike ride in Hopfgarten, Austria. With a GoPro at my disposal (definitely a must-have if you are a dynamic traveler!), the uphill and downhill track was a challenge. To think that I had not ridden a bike since my teens! Bike rentals are a great way to explore. London, Nice, Hopgarten, Munich and Holland, to name a few, are great places to explore on a bike.

If you are a water baby, surfing or wakeboarding are a couple of great ways to burn calories. It works major muscles, especially your back, core and leg muscles. You will definitely feel the burn… Not to mention make great friends as the boardsports scene always comes with a friendly crowd!

The Hotel Room Workout

Business travel tends to make you quite sedentary. When I am burnt out from work or if I just need a way to relax, I usually do my hotel room workout. These include jumping jacks, burpees, jump squats, push ups and planks done in circuit progression.
Do each exercise for 40 seconds followed by a rest for 20 seconds. Repeat the circuit 3-5 times and feel the burn! These will not only raise your heart rate, but it will also take less than 20 minutes! If you do not have much time on your hands, this is the perfect workout.

Life is definitely more fun when shared with a friend.. or with new friends!

The Diet That Travels With You

Diet wise, you don’t need to sacrifice trying different cuisines to cut calories. Portioning can still be practiced, especially when shared with a mate. Coming from a tropical country, berries are both expensive and scarce. In Europe or America, I’d hop over to the nearest grocery and indulge in fruit.
Berries are generally low in calories, but full of antioxidants. These are easy to pop in your mouth on when you’re low on energy. Going to a supermarket is also a cheaper alternative. Carry a small water bottle, and refill along the way.

Let’s not forget the double thrill of strolling and shopping - whether you’re walking along the luxurious Champs-Élysées or Mariahilfer Straße, finding great shopping deals in Florence, or bargaining in the night markets of Hong Kong. Outlet stores offer huge discounts and a multitude of options. It burns calories, but not necessarily your pocket. (And don’t forget to enjoy your tax refund!)

Pre-travel fitness preparations give you more stamina to explore and experience more. My advice? Be optimistic, stay hydrated, eat well, dress comfortably, invest in a great pair of walking shoes, take a deep breath and enjoy!
