“The only thing to Fear, is Fear itself.”

Palms sweaty, teeth clenched, I feel as if my heart is about to explode it’s pounding so fast! When I think of what I am about to do, I can feel the jalapeno crisps I ate for breakfast churn in my belly and try to come back up. Poor choice of breakfast on my part, but then again, I don’t think I could keep anything down before jumping out of a perfectly good airplane!

We arrive at Sydney Skydivers at around 11:30am, and partner up with our Jump Masters. Mine was Cindy, a kamikaze-adrenaline junkie to the max! She has been jumping out of airplanes for the past seven years, helping people get over their fear of heights and teasing them along the way. “Ready to jump out of an airplane at 14,000 feet?” She asks me with a huge grin.

“Yes,” I squeak as we board the plane.

Cindy quickly attaches my harnesses to her own, and we settle down with the rest of the ragtag group as the plane jerkily takes off. The cabin shakes and feels like it is about to fall to pieces, just like my peace of mind. At about halfway up, Cindy points out over the beautiful landscape beneath us. Looking down at the tiny earth below, I feel my fear of heights increase tenfold. My boyfriend Taylor sits in front of me, a perfect picture of calm and serenity. I, on the other hand, am a sweating nervous wreck; laughing uncontrollably out of excitement or fear, I don’t know which.

As we hit 14,000 feet, I watch in horror as the first pair of divers prepare themselves for the jump: a tiny girl from Japan and her burly Australian Jump Master. I see her face is about as white as my own, and then suddenly, without warning, she disappears out of the side of the plane into the white clouds billowing around us. Taylor and his jump master move towards the door, and I start freaking out, shouting “Oh my god! Oh my god!” I watch him disappear out of the side of the plane - I am next!
Cindy moves us forward into the doorway. I feel a huge rush of adrenaline surge through me.

I try not to look down and remind myself that this was my idea!

“Hips forward! Hips forward!” She yells as I do the exact opposite, hanging completely outside of the airplane.

“You ready?” She asks, and as I scream “No!” we fly into the air, straight down to the earth below.
My heart screams out of my chest, I shout every obscenity known to man as we hurl down to the ground. For one whole minute we are flying, completely free! White noise muffles every sound, including my screams.

I feel an extreme sense of exhilaration and confirmation of what it is to be alive!

After sixty seconds, Cindy lets out the parachute and we glide through the air, over trees and the valley below. “Wanna try it again?” she asks, and I laugh and shout for joy!

We make it back down and I rush over to Taylor, embrace him and laugh aloud! Adrenaline coursing through our veins, we excitedly talk to the other divers and look at all of our hilarious pictures together.
