When I quit my job in 2011 to go on long term travel, I was told I was committing career suicide. "What will you do when you come back?", they asked.

But I was not planning on coming back.

I was intent on leaving my old life focused on career and climbing the corporate ladder. I wanted to forge a unique path focused on my passions. The goal was to eventually make travel a way of life

As an Asian woman, I knew that task was seemingly impossible. Just a few years ago, I knew of very few Asian women who either traveled long term or were making a living while on the road. Most Filipinas were expected to work hard in their 20s, marry well and have kids before their 30s.

But what about women like me who were neither interested in (a) career or (b) family?

Shouldn't there be an option c?

The Asian Women's Empowerment Conference 2013 (AWE '13) is all about empowering women to have and even make their own options. It was designed by founder Juno Kim or Runaway Juno so that freelancers, world travelers, non-profit starters, bloggers, creative minds and women with passion can make a change in their lives.

AWE ’13 will be held at The 5 Elements Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from November 8 – 10, 2013.

Our aim is to empower modern Asian women to follow their dreams and thrive in an independent lifestyle. We are restricted by culture, religion, and social convention. Many ambitious women have gone abroad, where it’s easier to follow their passions. While it is still difficult to choose our own path in Asian society, there are inspirational Asian women who have made an impact in our global world. AWE Conference will present models of successful Asian women, and discuss participants’ current life goals through workshops while designing the road to success.

AWE ’13 will be lead by fourteen inspiring speakers, women who have followed their passion, and have achieved enormous success. They will share their stories of struggle and success with participants, providing real-world guidance and inspiration. They will also answer questions and offer practical information to participants so they can begin creating their own unconventional success stories.

To name a few: Jeannie Mark of Nomadic Chick will talk about Female Solo Travel. Melissa Leong will discuss Kicking Off Your Freelancing Career. Anis Ibrahim of Five Foot Traveller will facilitate a Writing Workshop.

I'm proud to represent the Philippines as one of the panelists for Effective Social Media Campaigns. I will be joining Yafieda Jamila of Travel Chameleon from Malaysia and Amalla Vesta of The Swanky Traveler from Indonesia.

Cebu Pacific Air will be flying me out to Kuala Lumpur so I can join these women and take part in this AWEsome and empowering event. It's the only Filipino carrier that offers a direct service between Manila and Kuala Lumpur with daily flights.
