Why You Should Be A Passion Blogger

Friday, September 13, 2013

Dear Sole Sisters,

I’ve just started my own travel blog as a side project. But now that I have one, how can I get people to actually visit my site? So far, I've been getting some traffic. But from the comments, I know most of it is just from friends and family.

I’m hoping to someday make money off the blog or at least become a well known blogger. Can you give me some tips?

Newbie Blogger

I got this email recently and it prompted me to ask: What makes a blog tick? It made me think of blogs that I visit often and what makes me do so.

Sure, these bloggers dish out interesting content on a regular basis. They have this fun, authentic vibe that makes me click around and explore like a stranger at a party. Most of them also have elegant, minimalist design that makes me want to linger longer than 2 minutes- the attention span of most digital people.

But what makes me visit their website day after day even after I have gone through more than 10 previous pages?

You can tell that these bloggers will write in the same unique and engaging voice whether their audience is 20 or 20,000. They will painstakingly spend more than 4 hours to write a post, edit photos and check every word to make sure their posts are engaging. They tweak their blog regularly and make sure the design doesn't just look good, it is functional for their readers.

And one of the most important gauge of a passionate blogger: one who actually asks their audience what they think and value their opinion.

So my advice to you newbie blogger is this: Be a Passionate Blogger.

I can say that being passionate is reason enough in itself. A blog after all is simply an outlet for self-expression. Or you can even think of it as a free version of therapy! But here are a few more reasons why you should blog with heart.

Build Community (Not Just Popularity)

When you write about what moves you, people are moved as well. Passionate bloggers don't just post their picture perfect vacation photos or write about the gourmet lunch they had at that newly opened restaurant or describe that pastel dress they wore on their last date. We have Facebook and Instagram for all that.

Passionate bloggers are human. And that's exactly why people read them. Your readers will not only be able to relate to your awesomeness but also to your struggles.

You Be You

Have you ever met a blogger that you've been following, in person, only to realize that they are not who you thought they were? It happens. Don’t try to imitate someone else in the hopes of learning their personal style. Readers can sense that sort of thing. 'Fake it 'til you make it' just doesn't hold true in the blogging world- or at least not for long. Real passion can be about anything- tattoos, beach life, your DIY projects. As long as it's about something you truly care about.

Whatever it is, it moves the human heart.

Enthusiasm is Contagious

I have this friend, Chris, who is absolutely enamored with bugs! He stalks them, takes photos of them and even sings to them! And I don't exactly like bugs- just the opposite. But I did enjoy hanging out with Chris- not because I enjoyed hearing what he had to say about bugs. But I was attracted to his energy and his passion.

So I guess my point is this: Whatever topic you choose to blog about, make sure that your enthusiasm always shines through. That's what makes it so addicting and contagious. That will encourage your readers to come back.

Write a Blog That Lasts

Sadly, of the 563,815 blogs that are created daily, only 7% of those will make it past 6 months. Okay I totally made that up. But you get my point, right?

The Achilles' heel of most bloggers is not starting a blog- it's sustaining it! If you're not 100% into blogging or your subject of choice, chances are, that's the only thing your blog is ever gonna be: a side project. You're going to blog once every week, then once every month, then- what blog?

Only passion will get you through the tough times. Times when you're staring at a blank screen and couldn't force yourself to type a single word. Times when you have 5 articles to write about and all you can do is browse through your friends' facebook timelines. Times when you think you've written something epic only to see it got 12 page views a week later- ouch!

It is the romance with words, images and ideas that makes blogging worth pursuing.
