Personal Goals: Surf Competition, Awe Conference, Fitness and Passion

Wednesday, September 04, 2013

Sometimes, this island life makes me feel so lazy content. Every day feels like a vacation. And this vacation has been going on for 2 and a half years now. I feel like a beach bum! It’s probably time to kick this beach bum’s lazy bum.

So I thought it was time to set some goals.

Goals. You know, a bunch of random stuff you list down on a piece of paper only to be kept somewhere safe, never to be seen again. (Sorry, that was the beach bum talking.) So I thought of writing down a few things I really wanted to do in the coming months and start making them happen.

Personal Goal #1 Join my first surf competition

So I learned to surf in 2007. I’d only started taking it seriously in 2010. And I bought my first board just last year. That's 6 years! Yeah, it’s been a slow but passionate love affair- but it's my longest yet.

In February of this year, I made a big commitment to only live by the sea, where there’s waves. And that has brought me to Secret Spot Baler, The Circle Hostel La Union and Turtle Surf Camp Siargao. Now I’m back to where I started.

Upon coming back to Baler, I found out about the first ever Philippine Wahine Classic- an all girls Surf Competition organized by The Surf Institute in Sabang Beach, Baler, Philippines from Oct 5-6. Isn’t that great timing? I still have time to get ready!

The goal of The Philippine Wahine Classic is to encourage and empower the female population who has fallen in love with the sport of surfing and the lifestyle that is synonymous with it. They encourage all surfing wahines to join, whether to compete or just to show support for fellow lady sliders.

I usually don’t like to compete especially at a sport that brings me so much joy that I don’t need to compare myself to others. But I also thought about pushing myself to become a better surfer. I need to make sure it doesn’t take me another 6 years.

After I saw a bunch of familiar names on the sign up page, I filled out the application form for Malihini (Novice) Shortboard. I think it’s gonna be fun!

Aside from supporting the women in the surf community, I also like the fact that all proceeds will benefit a new community water filter distribution program. PROJECT PHIL UP which offers Filipinos the unique opportunity to obtain fresh, clean drinking water, while allowing them to simultaneously save much needed pesos.

And because I want to support more women to try surfing and to compete, I also want to help others make it happen. We will be sponsoring 2 ladies to join the competition and cover for their registration fee, 2 nights of accommodations as well as round trip transportation from Manila to Baler, Aurora.

If you are interested in joining the Philippine Wahine Classic and want to be sponsored, please send us an email at solesisters(dot)weare(at)gmail(dot)com. Tell us a bit about yourself, your surf experience and why you want to join. This is only open for ladies who have not signed up as of Sept 4, 2013.

Personal Goal #2 Speak at an International Event

Speaking has always been one of my passions. Ever since I started a career in Training and Development, I’ve always known that connecting with a group of people excites me. After quitting my job and going on a long trip, I knew I could always come back to speaking. So I’ve done learning events- in schools, companies and organizations. The topics I speak about range from travel, blogging, social media to passion.

Before, I just got to talk. Now I get to talk about things I actually care about.

Personal Goals2

I’ve spoken in different places in Manila, Cebu, Bacolod, my hometown of Davao, Surigao and even most recently in General Santos City. And I’ve always hoped to be able to speak internationally.

So I was thrilled when I got invited to represent the Philippines and speak at the Asian Women's Conference in Kuala Lumpur from Nov 8-10. The conference aims to empower Asian women to follow their dreams and thrive in an independent lifestyle. If you want to learn more about the event as well as other inspiring women who will be speaking, check out their website:

More importantly, if you wish to join us for this life changing event, you can register here or learn about sponsorships. The conference is being organized by Juno Kim of Runaway Juno. Had I not been invited to speak at this event, I would still have attended if only to meet inspiring Asian women like Juno and Jeannie of Nomadick Chick.

Personal Goal #3 Passion Play

I'm a very passionate person myself and I hope to get more people to start living the life of their dreams. The only catch is that Travel is my #1 Passion. And you can't schedule too many retreats and workshops when you're always on the move.

So I'm making another commitment to have at least 2 more workshops before the year ends. I'm having Passion Play for Bloggers and another for Entrepreneurs in the coming months. If you don't know about this retreat but are interested in finding out what you want to do for the rest of your life, check out the website here: and why you should join.

I will share the schedule and details on the blog in the coming days so watch out for that!

Personal Goal #4 Keep Fit

This year I turned 31. And I never felt more fit, healthy and strong. Like most girls, I had issues with my body image when I was in college. I thought I was short, fat and lacked a neck in most pictures. I still am short and chubby but I did manage to grow a neck in the last few years.

I also started getting into sports like tennis and surfing. And I began to use my body for fun stuff like travel and yoga. Then I learned to be more conscious of the things I eat.

When you start using your body for activities rather than just stare at it in the mirror, you learn to appreciate it more. Not just how you look, but how you feel. And I definitely feel good. So yeah, I'd like to keep things that way for as long as I possibly can.

Personal Goal #5 Become a Better Partner

I suck at relationships.

There I've said it. I have personality flaws and I tend to move around so much that I intimidate people who want me to stay. Trying to keep a girl who travels and possibly disappear from your life can be quite unnerving for most men. Guys, raise your hands if you agree.

I know. I've made certain, irrevocable decisions and choose to live a unique, nonconformist lifestyle. But that doesn't mean I should stay single forever, right? Girls, raise your hands if you agree.

Thankfully, I've recently met someone who accepts and maybe even appreciates that side of me. (Well, maybe not the disappearing act.) And I hope to share more adventures with him very soon.

And in case you're reading this dad, no, he's not the bum in the photo.

So that's it. Those are some personal goals that I set for myself. And what’s a better way to motivate yourself to accomplish your goals than putting them where people can see them? And I don't just mean the refrigerator door. I'm putting them where EVERYONE can see them. Like you guys. Because you’d call me on it if I didn’t do the stuff on my list, right?

And just for fun, I asked my Sole Sisters to come up with their own personal goals:

Lauren has a list focused on the ocean, art and of course, travel! She wants to surf more and eventually do underwater photography. And her most outrageous goal? Travel the world for 1 year! Check out her full list here.

Adi is off to Hawaii in the next few days so she made a list specific to that. She wants to learn some cooking and massage techniques specific to the islands. Her heart also goes out to family- making sure she visits her nieces, Amihan & Sofia while she's there. Her most touching and personal goal is to see places that her Dad visited over 30 years ago. Read her entire list here.

Stephanie wants to save sufficient amount of money for her backpacking trip a year from now. She also wants to focus on her photography. Another goal is to become stronger, not just skinnier. And she wants to better at surfing. Check out her list and other upcoming projects here.

From our Readers:

Carla shared not just 5 goals but 7! She wants to get back to the travel groove,  get healthy and fit, revamp her blog, learn from the current job, take one good lesson on wheels, watch an epic concert and give her heart a break. How's that for motivation? Check out her complete list on The Random Pinay!
