Anyone planning a long trip in a foreign country should be well aware of how difficult it can be to ensure a smooth road ahead. The endless check-lists and itineraries, tickets and visa applications begin to weigh that wanderlust down. However, the joy of the digital age is beginning to take the edge off organizational obstacles by providing a multitude of apps catering for the savvy traveler.

Let's take a look at five of the most useful:

This useful little app should be your first port of call if you’re having a little trouble deciding exactly where you want to go. With travel stories, reviews and tips from over 500,000 real travelers, the travel bug is sure to bite. Use Minube's Inspiration page, including thousands of photos, to decide your location and then create interactive travel plans to share with your travelling companions. Think of it as Sole Sisters, in an app!

Track Spending

Isn't budget the Achilles' heel of even the savviest traveler? Whilst this app may be aimed at the business traveler, there is no denying its value to the average backpacker. Now you can work out your budget and traveling expenses in the most intricate detail ensuring that your shoe-string budget is milked for all its worth. Expensify also has the ability to store all of your bank account and card details meaning that you can access your money even if a light fingered local takes off with your wallet. Definitely something I need to stretch the travel fund for months at a time!

Packing Pro

Packing Pro

Traveling light and packing the things you need (and only what you need) is indeed an art. Packing Pro makes this process a breeze by allowing you to create comprehensive lists with friends, ensuring you don't end up with five bottles of mosquito repellent and no sunscreen. True story.

Tripit allows you to create exhaustive itineraries that are editable by your entire travel group. Here you can include reservations, flight times, maps and more ensuring you are all up to date with the latest plans. The app works seamlessly with Google Maps and organizers such as Outlook and Google Calendar. The best part is, it's completely free. Exactly what this global freeloader needed to hear.

Ok, this one's a little location specific but it's such a great app that I had to include it. Roadside America is perfect for those taking the road trip of a lifetime and wanting to see America's more esoteric side. With this app you can easily create a route that takes in the imposing automotive stature of Carhenge in Nebraska, the mysterious desolation of Maine Desert and of course the simply weird World’s Largest Twine Ball.

There are many more apps on the market that can help you, not only plan your trip, but also during your travels and it's certainly worth making the most of them to ease your passage. Should you plan on a trip through America you are particularly lucky, as many cater for the US exclusively. However if you become so entwined in the American Dream, why not consider applying for a green card at this site and begin a different kind of lifetime adventure?
