What to Pack in Your Travel Makeup Kit
Thursday, October 25, 2012
Imagine
a lady guard at the airport checks your hand bag and surprises you with a new
rule that says you are only allowed to bring one makeup item with you; she then
points to a memo - proof that she's not just making up the rule.
Doomsday!
Doomsday!
Of
course, I'm just messing with your creative imagination and I don't think
that scenario would ever happen but who knows? So, if you had to pick only one
makeup item to bring your travel, what would it be?
Time to decide!
Time to decide!
This
doesn't mean looking glammed up or super made-up all the time but being at
least decently groomed enough to look just as nice as the places we're
at.
I
remember this quote by Calvin Klein on makeup, “The best thing is to look natural, but it takes makeup to look
natural.”
To
help you digest what he means, take a look:
(Right: Me sans
makeup Left: Me in a natural makeup
look)
If you can step out in the open with a bare face, without makeup - not even powder or lip balm - good for you! I reckon you have good skin or maybe you're lazy to wear makeup or you just don't give a fuss at all. But for those who can't, I'm guessing that packing a makeup kit for travel can be daunting.
It's
quite a challenge how to narrow down the products to bring and how to keep them
to a minimum for packing light.
Let
me share with you my must-haves when traveling:
(Note
that these are for personal use. Traveling as a makeup artist is altogether a
different challenge.)
- FOUNDATION/CONCEALER - If you are blessed with flawless face, you may skip this.
You may also use BB cream or tinted moisturizer as a substitute but I personally cannot leave home without my concealer.

TIP: Apply foundation or concealer only on areas that need concealing or evening out such as under eyes, blemishes and sides of the nose.
And remember, the key to flawless makeup is blending, so just
blend, blend, blend!
TIP: When applying this, best not to do it in an angry wiping
motion with a puff; instead, pat your sponge or puff gently onto your
skin. If you have visible pores, try doing the push-and-roll motion with your
puff - this will help make them appear less visible as the product fills in
your pores.
- MASCARA + CURL LASH- I don't always wear mascara (which must be waterproof)
but I always keep it in my kit for nightwear such as special dinners and
parties.
TIP: Forgot your curl lash? Use a spoon! Just heat in hot water, dry, and use its back to shape your lashes.
- CHEEK & LIP TINT- Since I am not mestiza (and I can't classify myself as morena either) I don't have naturally pinkish glow so I cheat my way using this.

TIP: Forgot your cheek tint, too? Grab your lipstick, lightly dab
some stain onto cheeks and set with powder for blush.
Reminder, the last thing you'd want to look like is flat and
ghostly from cake-y makeup - so keep in mind to blend.
- LIP BALM-
I stay away from stinging pain of sore, chapped lips by regularly applying
lip balm.
TIP: Have you noticed that most long wearing lipsticks cause your
lips to dry and crack? Save long-lasting lippy for important events and for
regular wear, use satin or moist ones. Always apply lip balm before wearing
your lipstick.
- OIL BLOTTING PAPER
TIP: Combat oily skin by blotting
instead of re-applying powder to avoid matte, flat and cake-y face.

Believe me, it took me a lot of trips to finally downsize my makeup kit because I'm such a moody packer. But if the lady guard were true and asked me the one item I had to take with me, I'd say concealer (and then maybe, I could ask my travel buddy to bring a cheek & lip tint, haha!)

I'd definitely go with a lip balm! :) I don't usually wear make up since I have an uber sensitive skin. But during special occasions, I prefer putting on a bit of make-up that would still make me look natural. :) During regular days and trips, I just have a lip balm + powder and lip and cheek tint for some blush if needed.
ReplyDeletemy checked-in luggage traveling the world was 18kg. my make up kit was 420grams! and someone made comment to my friend that it seemed like i hardly brushed my hair daw. haha.
ReplyDeleteI'd bring my water-proof liquid eye liner! I could go on with a bare face the entire trip but the eyeliner is just non-negotiable. That and an eyebrow pencil and brush. :D
ReplyDeleteSometimes, it's really katamad to put anything on the face then I regret wearing a bare face upon seeing photos. Haha! Admittedly, I hardly comb my hair, I just run my fingers through 'em.
ReplyDeleteNo sweat packing makeup for you! Judging from your list, I'm guessing either you have a slim, tiny makeup bag or you just squeeze your makeup in your hand bag pocket. :)

No-makeup makeup is the best in opinion, but it's also the hardest to achieve if you strive for perfection. My trick is to use honey on my lips before I go to bed, they stay so hydrated and are so voluminous when I wake up, try it, you won't be sorry! Just don't use to much honey to avoid any mess.
