Letter to the Sole Sisters from a Fil-AmericanWednesday, March 07, 2012
I love getting mail, who doesn't?
And lately, because of the Cebu Pacific Smile feature, we've been getting more than the usual amount. I thought I would share with you some of these emails to encourage you to share your own stories with us.
Here's a letter from Chris Johns a half Filipino half American ecologist from Gainesville, Florida. He's currently in the Philippines to spend time with his lola, and also to do research on conservation biology. This is what he wrote:
Dear Sole Sisters,
I owe you ladies and your website (along with all of the wonderful others that empower Filipinos to explore) a huge thank you! I'm here in the Philippines for about a year, under the monicker of doing some conservation research for grad school.
But on a more profound level, acquainting myself with a country and a part of me that I don't know.
As a USA-born half-Filipino, I traveled here a few times as a kid just to visit family. I never really had the opportunity to understand this place. My previous trips were short and my family here is wonderful. But they are protective and as worried as any about my adventurous lifestyle.
Coming back to this place now, as a young adult, world-traveler, and adventure-addict, I have felt a strong desire to reintroduce myself and this country. I desperately want to experience this amazing place, but hadn't known where to go or look. That is, until I found your site, and sites like it!
A few weeks after I got this letter, I met up with Chris in Manila to talk about his work here and some mutual passions: surfing and travel among others. He was very enthusiastic to learn and rediscover his Filipino heritage. There were a lot of projects that he wanted to start in the country and mostly towards eco-tourism and environmental preservation.
