If you had only ONE chance to go to Palawan, which island destination would you choose: El Nido or Coron?
I'd like to throw that hypothetical question right atcha. Well, maybe it's not so hypothetical, some of you might have even asked that question already. After all, not everyone has a lot of opportunity or the money to go there twice. Palawan's not exactly an easy place to get to nor is it cheap. Sadly, some of us will only have one chance to visit the Palawan paradise.
I was lucky enough to visit both Coron(in 2008) and El Nido (read all about my 7k Palawan adventure). As I mentioned in this article, I scored less than P300 air fare to Puerto Princesa on Cebu Pacific's Piso Fare promo. Well guess what? The fare I got for Busuanga was even cheaper than that! I paid...hold your breath...ZERO pesos, as in nil zilch wala nada. You could say I'm one lucky girl...or maybe I'm just a travel addict who constantly stalks budget airline websites for free seat promos.
Since we've already established my skill inscouring stalking cheap air fares, let me help you choose between El Nido and Coron. I'll share my adventures, a ton of pictures, an overload of information and superlativesand maybe toss in a bit of wisdom too.
We stayed at Krystal Lodge during our trip in 2008. Their rooms are on stilts and are directly on the water. It was so cool to wake up to the sound of waves underneath you and hear the soft sounds of the boats returning from a night out at sea. What was even cooler was getting fetched right at your door water step by your boatmen for your island hopping trip!
When I shared how I almost won the 7k challenge, I told you that we loved staying at the cozy Hadefe Cottage. We liked their native cottages, beautiful views of the nearby islands, the wonderful staff and most importantly, the wallet-friendly price. At Php750 per night on a room that fits 5 people(150/person), Hadefe was my definition of cheap.
CORON
Kayangan Lake - This is the scenery plastered on any Coron postcard, website or travel guide. This lake is one of the cleanest lake in the country. Needless to say, it is absolutely breathtaking!
Mount Tapyas - This is the highest point in the town of Coron. To get to the top, you would need to take 700+ steps. There's a reason why this picture is taken from afar.
Siete Pecados - This is probably my favorite spot in Coron (considering there are lots of great places in Coron, this was a tough call). I spent close to 4 hours snorkelling in the marine sanctuary, I snorkelled until I almost grew fins and gills.
Maquinit Hot Springs - The hot spring is so close to Siete Pecados that I considered swimming/snorkelling straight to it (if only I hadn't been in the water 4h already). Go here after a day of island hopping and snorkelling to soothe those tired muscles and feet (heaven!).
Best time to Go: Before sunset
Warning: Immerse yourself sloooowly, it's hot!
Banol Beach - Stop here for lunch or take a break in between the snorkel spots. White sand, beautiful karsts and lots of little coves to explore.
EL NIDO
The Hidden Beach - Right behind these karsts is a secluded beach complete with white sand. Although, there's no sense going there if it's low-tide (like we did) because then the hidden becomes no beach at all.
Around the Islands - El Nido has 45 islands. You can just point to an island and tell your boatman 'Let's stop there, that looks like a nice island.'
Small Lagoon - Check out the Sole Sister guide to get to the lagoon in one piece. I'm telling you it's totally worth it!
Snake Island - It's not really a snake nor is it an island, it's actually a sandbar. Swimming's not so good here but the view from the top of the nearby hill is amazing.
Matinloc Shrine - Climbing to the top of the shrine to the cross gives you shaky knees. Shaky knees caused by the height (fear of falling headfirst on the jagged rocks below) and the amazing 360 view of the El Nido islands.
And the winner is...
It's like this, you see this fab pair of Manolos. You absolutely adore them but you see almost the exact pair at Zara. Yep, I know we all would choose the Zara ones in a heartbeat. Sole Sisters, Coron is your Zara when it comes to Palawan.
Until the next trip,

El Nido or Coron?
Getting to both islands and being able to compare them is actually one item on the Sole Sisters' 30 before 30 list! 5 down, 25 more to go.

El Nido vs Coron, no holds barred. We break down the pros and cons of each destination to help you in planning your dream island getaway.
Location, location, location
How easy is it to get to the place? And when I say easy, I really mean cheap.
Coron, the town, is located in the island of Busuanga. While Coron is the name of the group of islands off Coron town located at the southern part of Busuanga island. Confused already? Me too!
El Nido Town is located at the north eastern tip of the baguette-like island of Palawan. It's 231km from Puerto Princesa with 1 airport (of course named El Nido Airport).
Option1 Direct Flight - Seair has resumed its flights to El Nido. It's a 1.5 hour flight that takes you directly to paradise...but at a cost. Air fare averages Php9,000-13,000 per person. I don't know about you but I really don't have 13k to spare!
Option2 Via Puerto Princesa - All local airlines fly to the capital city of Palawan. Air fare averages at Php1,500-3,000. It's an 8h fun and bumpy ride from PPS to El Nido. You have 2 options to get there:

By Plane - Fly to Busuanga from Manila via PAL Express, Cebu Pacific or Zest Air. Average air fare costs Php2,000-3,500*. Van from Busuanga airport to Coron town costs Php150 per person. Sole Sister Tip#1: Zest Air offers the lowest fare among the 3 airlines. Book a month in advance to get lowest rate.
By Boat - Superferry goes through Coron on it's way to Puerto Princesa from Manila. (Not sure though if Superferry stopped their trips to Coron, no info on their site.)

1. Bumpy w/ AC: Take the private shuttle vans that depart from Fort Wally Shutle Terminal at 7am, 11am or 1pm. Contact Ms Evelyn for reservations at +639209815702. Fares cost Php600 one way.
2. Bumpy+Fresh Air (and sometimes chickens): If we were in South America, this would be called a chicken bus. Sweety Bus (gotta love that name) leaves PPS at 5am and 8:30am, although that may change depending on the driver (or the chickens). Fare costs Php350 one way.
Sleeping Arrangements
Which place offers backpacker prices? When I say backpacker prices, i really mean dirt-cheap prices.
Coron offers a lot of budget friendly options. Majika Lodge (+639102292213) (+639102292213) have single rooms for Php250/night with shared bath and kitchen. You can get rooms at Seabreeze Lodge (+639216904494) for as low as Ph150-250 with free WIFI.

| Rooms on stilts! |
If you don't mind the 5minute walk from the main street to your room(we didn't), then Krystal Lodge would be perfect for you since rooms only cost Php1,500 for 5. If you do the math, that comes to only Php300 per person. Sweet!
El Nido Town offers budget-friendly rooms as well. The Alternative has cozy and funky rooms (named Wisdom, Healing, Faith, Light, Love or Strength) that costs between P500-1,200 per night. Tandikan and Dara Faye Cottages have rooms for Php500-800.
FYI, there are no 5-star(or even 3-star) hotel accomodations in Coron town or in El Nido town. Both towns cater to the backpacker crowd and divers rather than the affluent.
Bang for the Peso
Which destination gives more bang for our hard-earned peso? When I say bang, yeah you guessed it...i mean cheap.
Both El Nido and Coron offer you a smorgasbord of islands to choose from for swimming, snorkeling, diving, kayaking or to just help you master the art of doing nothing. In fact, you can spend a week island hopping and you still wouldn't have explored all the islands. We should know. We spent 2 wonderful days exploring both El Nido and Coron yet we only managed to get to only a few of the islands! 2 days was definitely not enough. Maybe a week month year would have been just perfect!
I'll let the pictures do the talking from here on...
CORON
Kayangan Lake - This is the scenery plastered on any Coron postcard, website or travel guide. This lake is one of the cleanest lake in the country. Needless to say, it is absolutely breathtaking!
1 We couldn't resist jumping from the boat when it docked.
2 The lake is surrounded by mountains on all sides. You have to go UP and then DOWN the mountain to get to the lake. The view on the way up is totally worth it!
3 Ahhh, you can see all the way to the bottom of the lake. That's how clean it is!
Mount Tapyas - This is the highest point in the town of Coron. To get to the top, you would need to take 700+ steps. There's a reason why this picture is taken from afar.
Maquinit Hot Springs - The hot spring is so close to Siete Pecados that I considered swimming/snorkelling straight to it (if only I hadn't been in the water 4h already). Go here after a day of island hopping and snorkelling to soothe those tired muscles and feet (heaven!).

And the winner is...
So, which island is really better? El Nido or Coron? Coron vs El Nido?
Finally after sharing what I love about Palawan and my travel tales in both El Nido and Coron, I still find it hard to answer that question. For how can you possibly compare one paradise to another paradise?
But, answer I must.
If you had only one chance to visit Palawan, pick Coron. I know some of you won't agree with me (heck, some parts of me are still arguing with some parts of me). El Nido is gorgeous, believe me. But when push comes to shove, we choose the option which would give us the same satisfaction but without the hefty tag price.
If I had to choose one island, this sums up why I would pick Coron :
- If you're on a limited time and an even limited budget, Coron is the place for you since air fare is cheaper and travel time is a lot shorter (compared to the chicken bus route to El Nido). Unless of course you want to spend 14 grand on a direct flight to El Nido...
- El Nido and Coron both offer amazing islands that you can explore to your heart's content. But again, Coron is nearer and cheaper.
- Your snorkelling and diving thirsts would be equally (if not more) quenched in Coron. For me, Siete Pecados gives you the best snorkeling experience hands down . For the divers, there are a number of WWII wrecks around Coron islands that would make you gape in awe.
- Coron gives you more bang for your peso since there are a lot more activities you can indulge in such as exploring islands, Banol Beach, Maquinit Springs, climbing Mt Tapyas. You can even go on a safari in Calauit Island Game Preserve and Wildlife Sanctuary!
It's like this, you see this fab pair of Manolos. You absolutely adore them but you see almost the exact pair at Zara. Yep, I know we all would choose the Zara ones in a heartbeat. Sole Sisters, Coron is your Zara when it comes to Palawan.
Until the next trip,
Sole Sister Chichi
This it the last post in my amazing 7k Palawan/El Nido adventure. If you're as crazy about Palawan as I am, read about my 7k Palawan budget challenge mechanics, the result, how I took it on, why we chose to tour Palawan (instead of DIY) and why I love El Nido unconditionally. There's even a video!

one more vote for coron! i want to buy my own island there someday (kapag mayaman na ako). and everyone from PTB is welcome to pitch a tent
Hey Andi! Let us know if you'll be stopping by the Philippines, we'll be happy to take you around even more amazing places like these ;)
We'll add the RSS feed shortly. Thanks for reminding us!
Team Coron it is ;) I also would like that. Hey, you can also drop by my island...food and lodging's on me! (sana totoo)
i want to visit el nido but the routes are either expensive or too time consuming. did you visit taytay/iwahig penal colony en route to el nido? those are breathtaking places too
coron has been my playground since college, my thesis site was there, if you go there and notice that they are developing the seafront, it was part of my thesis that is now unfolding... PAK!
Glenn
Really good post you got there girls. I enjoyed reading it.
You know my pick will be El Nido :) But, then if we all liked the same place it would be a little boring.
Well done for the vs idea. Would like to see more of Philippines vs Philippines locations ;) Enjoy
Oh yeah, I remember you mentioned about your thesis in Coron Glenn! Lucky lucky you. I wish I could go back. Now na!
Hi Dave! Thanks for the kind words, means a lot ;)
Yeah, I knew you'd pick your island. Either way, it's win-win.
We have more battles up our sleeves, watch out for that. We're excited about this new series!
Awesome! I was lost in their for a minute and forgot I'm on night shift!
very entertaining and informative at the same time. galing!
i'll cast my vote next year after I got to see El nido. =)
i love this comparison! I haven't been to Coron but is hoping to visit soon & information about the place is so worrtthh it! Thanks for these! Gujab!
Hi Earl, thanks for getting lost with us!
Chyng, thanks for that boost in our confidence. It's good to know I've achieved what I wanted to...informative but not boring. Whew! Cge, come back next year and let us know what your choice is.
Pilyamaldita aka Figlet, good to know it helped you out in some way. Thanks for always dropping by :) Happy Travels!
i love coron, but i couldnt compare it to el nido because i havent been to el nido yet...palawan is such a blessed place for having multiple beautiful islands...
Hey there Flip! You're right, Palawan is really a treasure-trove of natural wonders. Toss a coin in Palawan and wherever it lands you can bet that it would be another surreal island. This is our wealth!
Love your post gurl! :) You're making me miss El Nido more and more. Sick of b**ches surrounded with buildings and carnivals. I wanna go back. :)
Hey Anj! Hope NYC's treating you ok. But you sure don't have places like Coron and El Nido there ;p
El Nido for me. Then again, I'm the type who's happy just lazing about in the beach (which is hard to do if you're staying in Coron town) ^_^
Good point Nina. Yeah you can do that in El Nido. Coron town doesn't even have a beach and some parts are sadly littered with garbage :(
Nice comparative review on El Nido and Coron. For now I would choose El Nido, since I haven't been there. Let's see what my answer will be after I get there. Thanks for this post. :)
Thanks Josiah for your vote. Let's see if you change your mind after going to Coron.
UDPATE:
Team Coron: 7, Team El Nido: 6.
What about you, have you made your choice? Vote now.

Coron or El Nido, I haven't gone to both! I want to go to either; now NA! hehe
soloflightEd.com
Go na Ed! You'd be missing a lot talaga if you haven't seen either one of these great Palawan destinations. I love both equally but I had to choose one lang :(
wonderful and humorous blog. loved it! and thank you!! im heading there next week. alone : ( but im a friendly girl and always do well on trips!!
i meant coron because of your blog
I'm definitely going to try traveling solo too sometime during our Southeast Asia backpacking trip. Let me know how it goes Kyrin! I'm sure you'd have fun even if you went solo, lots of new people to meet. Isn't that the best part about traveling?
Voting for El Nido. Binagyo kasi kami sa Coron at nastuck kami ng 9 days (instead of 4). UBERPHAIL dahil sa Bagyong Jolina.
such a helpful blog thanks (= definitely goin' to Coron though solo in 2 weeks time
up for el nido.
so helpful!!! thank you!!!
Oh that's so sad Benj! Maybe you'll get to visit Coron someday without the storm!
Thanks for dropping by Cheri! Glad you found this article helpful. How did you Coron trip go?
Vote taken Ayan!
Glad you found the article helpful O&J!
Glad you found it helpful O&J!
great series you've created here ladies!!! clap clap clap...make me envious all the more (simply because i haven't been to El Nido yet!!!)...2 years ago, i got the chance to spent 4d/3N in coron, and i just love the place(islands) & everything about it...(step aside Boracay loverxxx)...and so my next destination should & must be El Nido...but..needless to say, im booked for Coron again!!! (courtesy of Cebupacific's pisofare 2 days ago!!! Coron Coron Coron....i
(for now, i'll just keep El Nido in my "(next ) top-list destinations"...huhu)
It's a win-win situation AJ. You don't lose regardless if you pick Coron or El Nido. I guess that's the bottom line of this article really. When it comes to Palawan, regardless which island you visit, you won't go wrong. Have fun in Coron! We'd love to hear your adventures!
how much money is needed for travel in coron? thanxx very informative :P
For a 3day/2night trip to Coron, 3,000-3,500php will be sufficient. Less if you don't plan on splurging on meals and pasalubongs ;)
I just booked for Coron.. just can't wait to go there.. very helpful article you have here.. ;)
Very helpful post, thanks! You have convinced me to go to Coron and I simply can't wait!
Have a great trip Imee! Don't forget to share your adventures with us!
Thanks Kate! Please share your stories with us when you get back!
This is a fantastic post! My boyfriend and I had been researching Coron and El Nido for our one week December vacation (we are teachers in Korea) and picked Coron for most of the reasons you mentioned. I cannot wait to go. Super excited!
Im in major envy mode because you'll soon be in what's the closest thing to paradise in my book Alexa! Would appreciate if you can share your trip with us so I can travel back to Coron through you ;p
with my tight budget, it's Coron vs. Coron na for me! hehehe
thanks for the tips! it's easier for me now kung alin ang pipiliin, alin ang naiiba between el nido and coron. now, its coron vs. that ploning island + calauit
Very helpful blog...I normally use lonely planet but this site is great and entertaining, Coron def sounds like a good choice when short on time and budget, was in PI in June 2010 and Jan. 2011 for 1 month and saw a few places in cebu (nalusuan, malapascua, bantayan, kawasan falls+Sinulog Fest) and also did the bora and puerto princesa thing...i'm ready to go back, me n the wife were both born in PI, moved to CA @ 11 yrs old and now in our 30's but has never experienced PI like we have in the last 2 years, we plan on backpacking there by next year for 2 months...cant wait!!!
Ladies, Coron inspires me most! Things going well, i am visiting this March, looking forward to lots of swimming time. Glad to meet you if your time permits.
Kostas
I've only been to Coron and am planning to hit El Nido once I get the chance to go back to the Philippines...and then perhaps compare those two. Coron was captivating!
Thanks for this article. Was planning to visit both el nido and coron for my vacation, but without researching I thought I could easily go to el nido from coron, hence I booked my flight to coron for 7days. :-/ which was very silly of me. So now we're pretty much stuck in Coron. But after reading your article, I don't feel so bad anymore. And will probably just go to el nido next time.
it's a tough question but if I had to pick or else i'll be beheaded, i'd chose Coron for diversity- hot spring, lake, lagoon, ranch, snorkeling, safari, diving. It's unfair to El Nido because it covers a small area mainly Bacuit Bay while when we say Coron, it stretches up to Calauit and the islands in Gutob Bay
hey girls...can you pls recommend websites where i can book cheap international flights including US?thanx much
how about puerto princessa? im still debating to my self where to go. help!
I've been in Puerto Prinsesa and our tour guide told us if we weren't going to El Nido the Palawan experience is not complete. So I told myself that I will visit the place soon. This post made me think that I want to go to El Nido and Coron tomorrow. hahah! Nice post and very informative:) Thank you!
Hi, we're group of 14 who went to Palawan. It's really a great place. there's one thing that we learned though..NEVER ENTRUST YOUR TRIP. IF YOU CAN BOOK, MAKE RESERVATIONS BY YOURSELF..BETTER! IF YOU WANT TO GO TO THE UNDERGROUND RIVER (UR), MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A PERMIT..NEVER STAY TO DUYAN HOUSE IF YOU DON'T LIKE COCKROACHES AND RATS! BY THE WAY, MAKE SURE YOU'RE NOT DEALING WITH UNACCREDITED "TRAVEL GUIDE OR TOUR GUIDE"..YOU'RE LIFE IN PALAWAN WILL BE IN A MESS IF U DO SO..AND NEVER DEAL WITH THIS PEPITO "PEPS" DONAIRE..HE'S A SCAM!
hi, if you want diving..go to Coron, if beaches..go to El Nido
really helps...... shukran for a great page!!! coron it is!!!!
hi! Love the blog and pics. How far is Coron from El Nido? Can I have a day tour each in just 2 days? I'm supposed to have a 3day tour in PP but wanna hit both Coron and El Nido for the remaining 2 days.
Hi! Ive been to Coron and Im planning a trip to El Nido. I loved Coron so much that Im afraid El Nido will disappoint. But I'm pretty sure it won't. I just want to add-- another attraction in Coron is Culion Island. It used to be the biggest leper colony in Asia. visiting the place is almost surreal. :)
El Nido is better. You just have to spend more to experience more of it. There are more islands to visit in El Nido than the island hopping tour in Coron, there are lagoons, and hidden and secret beaches, good snorkeling sites. More adventure in El Nido. There's also a "Maquinit" hotspring, same name.
But for bang for the buck, it's Coron. El Nido is the best in the Philipppines, but I will still go to Coron because my wife hasn't been there.
Just the perfect article I need for my Palawan trip next year. The best, ever. Thanks Chichi.
I love this! Never been to Coron yet, sadly kaya di pa ko makacompare.
excellent review.. thanks for this. had to research about manolos/zara (i'm a guy).. i get it now whew haha
If you're going to Coron and you have some time to spare, try Malcapuya Island. It's not within the island loop usually offered in tours. It's around 1.5++hrs travel by boat. But it's definitely worth it. I just can't explain how great it is. I really love Coron!!! Great snorkelling sites (yeah, all of us almost grew gills & fins as well) for a very cheap price (for 12 pax, we spent around 2K each for our 3D/2N stay, food, island hopping + entrance fees)...+ very kind people. Our bangkero, kuya Toto even volunteered to buy and cook our lunch on our way to Malcapuya I surely want to go back ^_^
Very informative and well written thank you for sharing..goodluck with your future endeavour.
Awesome review, Coron it is! great post!
My plan is to fly in to Coron, and after few days of snorkeling, take a 5 day wilderness adventure by boat with Tao Adventures to El Nido. After a few days lying on the beach there, I would catch the 8-hour ferry from El Nido back to Coron in time fly out from there.
Does that sound reasonable? What do you think?
Hello chichi...nice work! Im planing to go to palawan wd my wife on may, i just wanna ask if its wise to book a package tour or we will just go there wdout booking...thanks a lot....
hi,i need your advice. maybe i have just one chance to travel Palwan, and only 7D.how many days should i spend on each Coron and El Nido? 3D in El Nido 2D in Coron or 2D in El Nido 3D in Coron or all the days in Coron? thx so much!waiting for your answer anxiously! email: qianrain19@hotmail.com
this is really helpful! Thanks! Looking forward to reading about your next adventure! God bless! :)
Thanks Kate! Please share your stories with us when you get back!
chi-chi the number for Majika Lodge (+639102292213) (+639102292213) is incorrect. :)
I've been in El Nido in Nov 2012 and everything was so magical. But i missed one of my have to do list in El Nido, climbing Taraw cliff. Hope someday i have opportunity to explore the beautiful Coron
