'What items can't you leave behind when you travel?'

The Sole Sisters have been asked this question many times so we decided to reveal what's in our travel packs. In fact, the Travel With-it Thursday series was started because of this.

Aside from this series, we want to share our ultimate 5 travel essentials (We're addicted to lists). After revealing our top 5, we looked at each other and laughed. We just realized how totally different we are from each other!

Sole Sister Lois can't travel without...
Lois Travel Essentials
1 Her camera Gabe. Gabe has been with her for almost 2 years and has been a constant companion on all her adventures since. He's really light and very reliable. He hasn't conked out on her yet. And he allows her to see the world in amazing light.

2 Lowepro Slingshot 200 AW which keeps Gabe safe and dry. It's a very convenient and lightweight camera bag. She can easily reach in and take photos without the hassle of opening several compartments like the old fashioned camera bags. It also has a waterproof cover that she needs for those boat rides and water festivals!

3 A good book. She loves bringing travel narratives because they are easy short reads. She will be taking a collection of Gabriel Garcia's short stories and Neil Gaiman's prose and poetry Fragile Things on the next trip to Bohol. Long novels are for longer flights.

4 Journals and notebooks for all those travel blog entries and random musings.

5 Sleeping mask and earplugs. Every sole sister needs them in her purse!

Sole Sister Chichi can't travel without...

1 Sarong. The Ultimate Sole Sister travel accessory - it can be used as a scarf, a blanket on cold nights/bus rides, a shawl to hide your bare arms when inside temples, a headwrap or even a burka. And it can even be used on the beach.

2 Sunblock. The skin is the largest organ in the human body. Uhmm...Chichi just wanted to share that fact. Btw, anything with an SPF of over 45 is just bullcrap.

3 A miracle dress that can be worn in multitude of ways, is easy to pack and most importantly...easy to wash/dry. She is still looking for a Pinoy made version of the AA Le Sac dress.

4 Ipod loaded with her favorite roadtrip playlists that includes:
   - 'Drive' by Incubus
   - 'Teardrop' by Massive Attack
   - 'Im Into Something Good' by The Bird and The Bee
   - 'Better Together' by Jack Johnson
   - 'Break the Ice' by Britney Spears (Hey, this is my list. Go, create your own! - Chichi)

5 Bikini. Chichi is a wannabe beachbum and a wannabe beach bum needs a good bikini. And 1, 2, 3 and 4 above. Do you see a pattern here?

We've shared our essentials, we want to know what's in your bag! Share it with us by leaving a note below.

Until our next trip,

Sole Sister Lois & Chichi

  1. Here's my top 5:

    1. Lighter/a box of match - I got the name "mr. caveman" because of these two. Hehehe!

    2. Flashlight - it's hard to see things at night when camping. =)

    3. My point and shoot cam (for now) - to capture the moments...planning to buy DSLR soon. =)

    4. Wallet with ID's and ATM - for security purposes...you know what I mean. =)

    5. Hand Sanitizer - with all of the cooking when travelling I do? I need clean hands...hehehe! =)

  2. Hi Mr. Caveman! Those are really useful stuff you have in your list. Thanks for sharing your Top 5!

Hi Sole Sisters! I truly enjoy reading your blogs. This entry made me think of my own travel essentials:

    1.) digicam
    2.) sunblock
    3.) VMV facial set
    4.) notebook
5.) sling bag where I can fit my digicam, notebook and wallet. I wear it while I go around the place.

  4. Hey Avegail! Thanks for taking time to read our blog, it's nice to know our ramblings, travels and random musings are read and enjoyed by other wonderful Sole Sisters like you!

Chichi will be checking out that VMV facial set that you swear by ;)

    Happy Travels!

  5. Lois says:

Hey there Kromer! Hope you get to #3 soon. A DSLR is a blogging essential.

Hey Avegail, I like your list. Practical with a kikay twist on #3.

  6. cool post girls!

    here's our list

RON's: 1.Antonio(The camera) 2.survival/first aid kit 3.the old straw hat 4.spare camera (sean) 5.wet wipes

    MONETTE's: 1.A pack of cigarette (at least a pack) 2.moleskin 3.sarong 4.iPod 5.a good book

    ;-)

  7. Oh yeah, wet wipes are really handy during travel! Can't really live w/o ciggies eh Monette, #1 talaga siya ;)

  8. Lois says:

I love how Ron named his 2 cameras! I wish Gabe, Antonio and Sean would meet someday ;-) And Monette, you and Chichi are smart with the sarong. I really need to buy one soon! Can't imagine I went to Alona beach in Panglao without a sarong!

  9. Fine, here's what I have...

1.) A feel good book. If I forget it, I have to find a bookstore. If there's no bookstore, I feel I failed for that trip.

2.) I used to have Penny Pentax, Shane Sony the H50 and Logan the Lumix. They're all gone now, Sebastien the Sony HX1 is my handy dandy companion. They're all named after exhibitionist porn stars.

3.) A set that has a sharp knife and a surface to cut on. Sole sister Chichi is witness to this. Hehehe, Gourmet camping Lois? Wanna try?

4.) A bag of coffee grounds good for 2 cups each morning for however long I will travel. There's no use waking up to spectacular views and all you'll have is sour instant crap.

5.) My green bag. Trekking over cliffs or trawling wet sandy beaches can get tiring. So when I feel the need to put my bum on the ground, in the bag will be whatever i have to entertain myself, soothe my feet, refresh my body... whatever.

My list is long... i can't wait to be a guest sister soon. Chichi and I are working on it. :p

    Nice post sisters!

    Here's my share:
Top 5 items in my backpack
    1. A set of photocopied identification documents
    2. Notepad and pen
    3. Digicam
    4. Emergency Cash
    5. Shemagh

  11. nina says:

    1) Camera - either my DSLR, my point and shoot or my mobile, depending on where I'm going

    2) Ipod Touch - personal entertainment system! I love how it lets me check my e-mail, update my facebook, write blog entries even without having to lug my netbook.

    3) Credit cards - one Visa, one Mastercard. Not that I want to abuse my cards (which I always do), but they're very handy when you run out of cash (or when money changers won't accept your dollar)

    4) Pen - because you need one to fill out those immigration forms

    5) A doll/toy/travel gnome :)

  12. You're Top 5 had us laughing out loud, kitchengod! Especially the etymology of your camera's names ;) Now, that's what you call GLAMPING! We also can't wait for your guest post, we're positive we can learn a ton from your post Future sole sister.

Hi guys..need help..i will be traveling soon and all the tickets that I bought walang check in baggage...kaya ba sa 7kls for 3 to 4 weeks?now pa lang nalilito na ako..:(

  20. Lois says:

I have to admit Rody, I started our 6 month journey with 12kgs. But I also forgot to buy checked luggage on our last flights from KL-BALI, BALI-KL, KL-MLA. So, I had to downgrade to 7kgs. It's really doable for 3-4 weeks. Just bring a backpack and another bag and you're set. As long as you don't bring pants and heavy shoes, you won't have problems. And don't forget to roll your clothes to maximize space. Good luck!

  21. Rudy says:

it's Rudy..hehehe.. thanks so much girl..because of you 2 hindi na kami takot with my partner..starting our Journey Nov 13 Jakarta-Sg-kl-BKK-Cambodia-HCH and back to manila...:) wish us luck..
btw way is it ok ba to book sa AGODA para sa guest house? Baka meron ka suggestion sa BKK and Cambodia. thanks and more power!

  22. Your blog inspired me to travel :) Hopefully I'll be able to do that this year maybe to Korea or Singapore. I even bought a journal for random thoughts and travelling ideas :)
